Shot seals (© Orkney Seal Rescue)
If you eat salmon please ask your supplier if seals are shot during the production of that salmon. If the supplier cannot guarantee that the salmon is seal-friendly, you could refuse to buy it and inform the company that shot seals are too high a price to pay. A letter from you to the supermarket, fishmonger, deli or restaurant where you buy your salmon could make all the difference (contact details for the major retailers can be found below), we have a suggested text below, please feel free to personalise it to your needs and send it to the company concerned. A copy of your letter to our Seals Co-ordinator would be very much appreciated.
To whom it may concern,
I am writing to express my concern that the salmon available from your company may have come from sources that shoot seals during the production of the salmon. There are non-lethal methods of predator control available therefore I feel that the shooting of seals is an unacceptable price to pay for your salmon.
I support the Seal Friendly Salmon campaign, therefore could you please confirm that that your salmon is supplied by a company that does not shoot or otherwise kill seals during the production of that salmon. If this assurance cannot be given, then unfortunately I will be obliged to source my salmon elsewhere.
The protection of seals and their marine environment lies in the hands of the politicians you elect and the shops and restaurants you frequent. Please let them know that if they want your support you expect them to become seal-friendly. Thank you.
